Portable Room Air Conditioner

Air Conditioner Size Is One Of The Most Important Considerations When Shopping For A Portable Air Conditioner Or Window Air Conditioner

Air Conditioner Size usually refers to the capacity of the unit rather than

physical dimensions. Air Conditioner size is measured in BTUs per hour (British Thermal Units). Ratings for window air conditioning units, are the same as portable air conditioner ratings.

It is common for people to buy an air conditioner that has too much cooling capacity, thinking that it will do a better job. An air conditioner that is oversized will not operate as efficiently as one that is properly sized. It is important to size a room air conditioner based on the estimated load that the unit will have to manage.

It is suggested by some suppliers that you purchase the maximum BTU rated air conditioner available and a dehumidifier to go with it. There are several reasons why this may not be a good idea.

  1. An added benefit of a properly sized air conditioner is that it will also help to dehumidify the space that it is cooling. This is of course only if the unit is sized properly.

  2. An air conditioner that is oversized can short cycle. This means that the compressor will cycle off and on too often. When this happens the compressor has a hard time restarting because the operating pressures within the air conditioner haven't had enough time to equalize. This can cause fuses to fail and circuit breakers to trip and compressor overloads to eventually fail.
